Dorian Male Voice Choir
Choir Master: Arthur Hare; Pianist: Hendry Merckel
The choir was started in August 1968 with a membership of twenty
enthusiastic and dedicated male choristers. The membership grew and
at one stage boasted a balanced choir of thirty six tenors and basses. For
twenty one years the choir performed at concerts, festivals, church services
and eisteddfods. They performed the length and breadth of Transvaal, also
traveling to Durban, Swaziland and Kimberley presenting a wide variety of
their excellent repertoire.
They swept the boards for several consecutive years participating in the
annual Eisteddfods organised by Ballet, Opera and Arts Theatre (BOAT).
With several members marrying and relocating in different areas and with
the demise of a number of stalwarts, it became more and more difficult to
maintain the high standards they had set for themselves. This had a
detrimental effect on the progress of the choir and so in 1989 reluctantly
accepted the inevitable closure.
Eighteen years later on 8 July 2007 the Choir was resuscitated to be part
of an historic memorable programme honouring an icon, Milton Oersen.
Over the past two years the choir has built a significant repertoir spanning
a wide sphere of genres. The focus is to sow a seed of awareness in the
communities around the joy of choral singing. The choir has performed
throughout the Gauteng Province and is setting its sights on performing
nationally and internationally.
